Simple Ways To Improve Oral Health Every Day

Dental health is one area where taking the proper steps can fight disease and decay on a daily basis. Dental professionals have been stressing the importance of proper oral health for decades. This is one reason why nearly 73 percent of the population brushes at least twice a day. Only 28 percent floss each weekday. Nearly one out of every three adults and children has had a dental treatment for a problem such as cavities. One way to improve dental health is to take small actions every day to care for the teeth and gums. There are several dental hygiene tips that will improve oral health over time.
Good dental health starts with the foods that are eaten every day. Firm foods such as apples, carrots or celery should be included with as many meals as possible. The firmness of the foods will work to clean the teeth during the day and will strengthen the gums. It is especially helpful to eat firm foods at the end of a meal. Foods that should be avoided include sugary drinks and treats. The sugar can stick to the teeth and accelerate tooth decay. Sugar also feeds bacteria increasing the risk of gum disease.
Brushing with a mixture of baking soda and water one or more times a week will improve dental health. Baking soda causes a chemical reaction that draws staining agents and other particles out of the enamel and dentin in the teeth. This will help to keep the teeth white after regular cleanings for a longer time. The baking soda also fights certain types of bacteria between teeth and on the gums. Baking soda is slightly harsh and can dry out the gums. This is why it is important to use baking soda only once or twice a week along with regular brushing and flossing.
The tongue is one of the areas in the mouth that attracts a large amount of germs and bacteria. Brushing the tongue can help to remove some of these bacteria. A much better option is to use a special device for oral health called a tongue scraper. This simple tool is run across the surface of the tongue. It removes the upper later of bacteria and saliva that normally gathers at night when the mouth starts to dry out. A tongue scraper should be used every time the teeth are brushed during the day. Scraping the tongue will also reduce bad breath.
Drinking water throughout the day prevents the mouth from becoming dry. A dry mouth allows bacteria to take root on the teeth, tongue and gums. Water also works to remove particles of food that are trapped between the teeth. Another good practice is to chew sugarless gum between brushing. The act of chewing the gum releases saliva that kills bacteria and breaks down food particles.
Brushing the teeth and mouth for just a few seconds does not help oral health as much as brushing properly each day. Brushing is most effective when it is performed for at least two full minutes. This is enough time to remove all of the food and bacteria in the mouth and to activate any chemicals in the toothpaste. It is also important to hold the brush at a 45-degree angle in order to get into the areas between the teeth and gums
